August 2014

Mark Simpson, Managing Director, CO2balance UK Ltd

Welcome to our August edition of the newsletter and as we say goodbye from our shores to a very successful Commonwealth Games, a games in which many of the countries co2balance operates in competed, we can look forward to the rest of the summer.

For some the summer is the time for rest and holidays, for CO2balance the past month has been very busy with lots of activities on the ground. We had two cookstove project audits in Kenya, one CDM verification visit in Kaptagat and Eldoret and one Gold Standard verification visit in Shimba Hills. The Kenya team worked very hard to make sure the smooth running of the trips, our in-country coordinator and community project officers provided invaluable support in making these site visits a success.

Still in Kenya, the Umeme Women's Improved Cookstove Project is continuing at a steady pace in West Kisumu, focusing now on the local awareness raising through demonstrations as well as broadcasting radio adverts in the project area.

In the meantime our borehole projects in Uganda are also making progress. We held the local stakeholder meeting of 3 new VPAs in Kaliro, Eastern Uganda and launched a participative WASH programme for the clean water projects in Northern Uganda.

Finally, you can read some interesting facts about Eritrea, where the latest project addition to our mPOA Improved Kitchen Regimes is being implemented by our partner organisation, Vita. The Dissemination of Improved Stoves in Zoba Anseba, Eritrea will help bring 8,000 improved cookstoves to households as well as supporting further training programmes locally.

I hope you will enjoy this edition of our newsletter and please do not hesitate to get in touch for further information on any of our projects and services.

WASH programme in Uganda

Any development practitioner would confirm the fact that without effective community engagement no clean water project can be successful, no matter how much energy, time and money spent on the project by other stakeholders. That is why CO2balance has launched a more participative WASH sensitization and community engagement programme in Kole, Otuke, Alebtong and Dokolo districts, where our borehole projects are implemented.

Successful CDM Site Visit

I had the pleasure of joining Moses, Virginia and our team of Community Project Officers to lead the 2nd monitoring period site visit for our CDM Programme of Activities (PoA) in Kenya. We have two Component Project Activities (CPAs) under our PoA, one in Eldoret East and one in Mathira District; we had to show our Project Auditor around both CPAs to verify the emissions reductions from the 2 sites. In all, we visited 40 households, all of whom were very happy with our stove and the Auditor confirmed that he was satisfied that the project was achieving the emissions reductions that we reported. Umeme Women's Group Jiko Enterprise-Opening Day

As you may already know from previous blogs, over the last few months Carbon Zero Kenya have been busy implementing the Umeme Women's Improved Cookstove project in West Kisumu. The 19th June marked an important landmark in the project lifecycle; the grand opening of the Umeme Women's Cookstove Enterprise. Wycliffe Odumo, our regional coordinator based in Kisumu, mentioned that there was a real sense of excitement and commitment among the women and local community which bodes well for the success of the project.
